Individual therapy - also known as psychotherapy, talk therapy, or counseling - is a collaborative process between therapist and client that aims to facilitate change and improve quality of life. The most popular form of therapy, individual therapy may encompass many different treatment styles including psychoanalysis, art, play music, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. Individual therapy allows our therapist and your child/teen to focus on each other, building a rapport and working together to facilitate change.
Typical talk therapy is not the norm in our office, we go beyond to give your child/teen a space to open up and feel comfortable during their session. We also give them the experience of using their newly learned skills in the safety of the therapy office. We allow them to use what makes them feel most comfortable, that may be expressed through music, arts, and crafts, or something as simple as rearranging rocks in a fountain while we are talking. Different people respond to different things and we ensure that our sessions are geared to the individual we are working with.
Through our processes, we work very closely with your child/teen to get them to open up and talk about what may be bothering them. We will organically bring the parents into the fold, we encourage and want the family to be involved in their child/teens therapy. We also want you to have a say in the treatment process and you are encouraged to participate to whatever degree you want.
Individual Therapy helps navigate through confusing time and behaviors. In individual therapy sessions, we focus on identifying the underlying causes of symptoms and provide strategies for changing unwanted thoughts and behaviors related to:
Individual Therapy can help overcome obstacles affecting your child/teens well-being. It can increase positive feelings, such as compassion and self-esteem. Children/teens in therapy can learn skills for handling difficult situations, making healthy decisions, and reaching goals. Many will even find they enjoy the therapeutic journey of becoming more self-aware.
The first session with the therapist often focuses on gathering information. One of our pediatric therapists will speak with your child/teen about their past physical, mental, and emotional health. We will also discuss the concerns they think are bringing them to therapy. It can take a few sessions for your therapist to have a good understanding of the situation.
You and your family can also use the first session to decide if the therapist’s style is a good fit for your needs. We know that finding a therapist that you and your child/teen is comfortable with is vital to successful treatment. It is important to talk about the type of therapy to be used, treatment goals, session length, and how many sessions are suggested.
Your therapists might assign “homework” to help your child/teen build on topics discussed in therapy. We typically find that as time passes, your child/teen develops a more positive mood and healthier thinking patterns.
Your child/teen can expect confidentiality during therapy sessions, we will discuss with them anything we will share with their parents and the rest of the family. But, your therapist may break confidentiality if someone is in immediate danger of harming themselves or others.
